CONTAINER SECURITY INITIATIVE (CSI)

On December 7, 2006, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Energy (DOE) announced the first phase of the Container Secure Initiative (CSI), an unprecedented effort to build on current port security measures by enhancing the US federal government's ability to scan containers of nuclear and radiological materials abroad and to better assess the risk of entry of the containers.

The initial phase of this CSI initiative consisted of deploying a combination of nuclear detection device technology in six foreign ports, including: Port Qasim, Pakistan; Puerto Cortés in Honduras; Southampton in the United Kingdom; Port Salalah in Oman; Singapore Port; and the Gamman Terminal at the port of Busan in Korea.

Beginning in early 2007, radiation risk analysis began.

SECURE FREIGHT INITIATIVE (SFI)

In March 2007, under the Megapuerto initiative, 3 RPM (Portable Radiation Monitors) were installed in Puerto Cortés by the United States Department of Energy, in order to check for possible radioactive threats.

On April 2, 2007, the RPM came into effect.
